A look at UFC 251: Fight Island

Fight Island has been confirmed by Dana White last week. Yas Island will be the home of the UFC’s Fight Island. Located in Abu Dhabi, the island is going to be consistent with holding events due to COVID-19. Finally fighters from all around the world can continue to battle it out in these difficult times. The first event is going to be UFC 251, a stacked card that’s got 3 title fights with the main event being Kamaru Usman vs Gilbert Burns for the welterweight title. Let’s break this card down fight by fight.

So as of right now the UFC has only announced its main card for that event. To start the main card off we have Paige VanZant vs Amanda Ribas. After a year and a half layoff Paige VanZant is looking to get back to being a contender in the women’s flyweight division. In Paige’s last fight against Rachael Ostovich she won by submission via arm bar in the second round. Since then PVZ has been keeping herself relevant with social media and will be back in the octagon July 11th. Amanda Ribas on the other hand is looking to continue her win streak in the UFC and to make herself a household name in the flyweight division. With a record of 9-1 and 3 wins in the UFC, with her latest win against UFC veteran Randa Markos, Ribas is establishing herself as the real deal in the MMA community.

The second fight of the evening will be a rematch of Jéssica Andrade vs Rose Namajunas. The two met before at UFC 237 when Andrade defeated Thug Rose with a vicious slam that knocked her out for the strawweight title. Thug Rose hasn’t fought in the octagon since the defeat but is looking to avenge her loss in this upcoming card. Andrade went on to fight Zhang Weili in her first title defense as champion and lost in the first round at 0:42 seconds. It’s safe to say whoever wins this fight will be getting another shot to regain the strawweight title.

For the third fight of this main card we got Petr Yan vs Jose Aldo in a battle for the vacant bantamweight title. Aldo just dropped down to bantamweight after coming off a loss from the current featherweight champion Alexander Volkanovski, and in the bantamweight division he has had one fight against Marlon Moraes in which he lost by split decision. The former featherweight champion is looking to add another championship to his resume with a win over Yan. Petr Yan has been on a rampage since entering the UFC with his latest win over UFC veteran Uriah Faber via KO. He has made himself a top contender in this division and is looking to show the world he is capable of being a world champion.

In the co-main event we got another rematch with Alexander Volkanovski vs Max Holloway. These two last fought at UFC 245 with a brawl that gave “The Great” a unanimous decision win over “Blessed”, since then Holloway is ready to get back in there and get his title back. Holloway has wins over some of the greatest fighters and former champions such as Frankie Edgar, Jose Aldo, Brian Ortega, and Anthony Pettis. Volkanovski is ready to put it all on the line as he gears up to defend his title against Holloway, with the first fight being a win by unanimous decision “The Great” vows to finish Max in their second fight coming up.

Now with the main event we have Kamaru Usman vs Gilbert Burns for a fight that is going to be crazy. Both fighters are brawlers with wrestling/ju-jitsu that will put on a show for the fans. Both fighters put on a grappling clinic against former champion Tyron Woodley. It will be a good show to see who can out grapple who, but if they decide to stay on the feet the fight will be a slug fest, both fighters have excellent striking. Gilbert made his move to the welterweight division last year and it seems to be a good decision, the contender shows he’s ready for anything after his dominant performance against the former champion. Kamaru dismantled Woodley for the welterweight title and went on to defend his title against Colby Covington who he defeated in the fifth round at UFC 245.
