College Football Recruiting: Highly Ranked 2021 QB To Purdue

Yesterday Purdue picked up a big-time commit and one that probably no one saw coming. Dual-threat quarterback Sam Jackson flipped from Minnesota to the Boilermakers late Wednesday night. This is the second time the QB from Illinois has de-committed from the Gophers, as it gives Jeff Brohm a top prospect to run his offense in the future.

Jackson will come in a part of the 2021 class being a 4-star recruit and being ranked as the 328th best player nationally per 247 sports. Jackson held offers from teams around the nation including Oregon, Notre Dame, and Michigan State among others. While having played Quarterback as a junior and that is his expected position at the next level it should also be noted that Jackson’s position is listed as an Athlete on 247, meaning he is not just being recruited as a QB.

Jackson did play as a Wide receiver his first two years at Naperville Central, tallying up 50 receptions, 900 receiving yards, and 14 touchdowns as a sophomore before making the move to quarterback as a junior. While it does seem Jackson will be playing Quarterback at the collegiate level, his versatility and athleticism make for an interesting situation if he doesn’t get to play right away as he could be put at another position. If that were to happen it wouldn’t be the first time a quarterback commit switched positions at Purdue, as Jared Sparks came in as QB only to switch to Wide Receiver.

Jackson will definitely have a lot to offer at quarterback though and his athleticism brings something to the QB position that Purdue has not had. While he is only 5’11” and 170 Pounds he makes up for his small stature with his big arm and ability to elude defenders. As a junior, he threw for 1,726 yards and 16 touchdowns. Looking ahead to the 2021 season it does seem Purdue will have a crowded quarterback room of over 5 players, But with Jackson’s talent, he’ll almost certainly find a way to get on the field eventually.

This is a huge get for Purdue as Jeff Brohm and the Purdue staff continue to try and gain more commitments for the 2021 class. A couple of notable recruiting dates include December 16th (First-day players can sign their National Letters of Intent), and April 1st(the final day players will be able to sign).
