New York Rangers’ Jesper Fast UFA status will be extended per a report from The Athletic that the NHL and NHLPA have agreed expiring player’s contracts will slide until the conclusion of the NHL season.
The New York Rangers continue to prepare for the restart of their season. The one thing they can put on the back burner, for now, will be the contracts of their unrestricted free agents. The club has two players on their roster who will become UFA’s when their contracts expire on June 30, Michael Haley and Jesper Fast.
Haley most likely wouldn’t have been offered a new contract, but Fast is a player the team would like to retain. He is in his final year of a three year, $5.550 million contract.
Michale Russo of TheAthletic.com has reported that the NHL and NHLPA have “intentions is to agree on a slide with the NHL Players’ Association, which would uniformly extend all contracts through the end of the 2019-20 season.”
This agreement would also cover minor-league players who are on two-way contracts. These players would be allowed to be on the expanded roster when games resume.
Other prominent UFA’s who will have their contracts “extended” are St. Louis’ Alex Pietrangelo, Arizona’s Taylor Hall, Boston’s Torey Krug, Toronto’s Tyson Barrie, Nashville’s Mikael Granlund, Minnesota’s Mikko Koivu, Chicago’s Corey Crawford, Vancouver’s Jacob Markstrom, Vegas’ Robin Lehner, and Washington’s Braden Holtby.
Coach’s extensions are not as simple
Coach’s who have contracts set to expire on June 30 have no collective bargaining agreement. Russo reported that a team executive told TheAtheltic, “There has been talk that the league will work towards trying to support clubs in extending staff contracts to capture the days beyond June 30th.”
Of the 24 teams projected to be in the playoffs when the season resumes there are no full-time coaches who will have their contracts. expire on June 30. Two interim coaches, Dallas’s Rick Bowness and Calgary’s Geoff Ward’s have expiring contracts on June. 30th. Both coaches are expected to be on their team’s bench through the remainder of this season, whenever that may be.
