The Washington Capitals announced early Friday that they have placed forward Brendan Leipsic on unconditional waivers for the purposes of terminating his contract after images of his private Instagram messages surfaced on the internet. Leipsic’s comments included extreme vulgar, profane, and demeaning language.
Leipsic apologized shortly after the remarks were leaked, stating that his friends twitter was also “hacked,” and that the images were “private conversations” that he was a part of.
The NHL responded to Leipsic’s messages on Wednesday stating that they would address the situation with the Capitals. The situation has now led Brendan Leipsic right out of a job.
The 5-foot-10, 182 pound forward was primarily known for his role on the 4th line. The 25 year-old has been on 5 different teams since the 2015-2016 season, and was only signed to a 1-year, $700,000 contract with the Capitals.
Leipsic appeared in 61 games this season with Washington before COVID-19 halted the play of all major sports, notching 3 goals, and adding 8 assists with the team.
